It’s Not You — Why Private Practice Feels Harder for Neurodivergent Therapists
Sep 09, 2025
Raise your hand if you’ve ever stared at your stack of notes and thought: Nope. Not today. 🙋♀️
Or maybe you’ve felt the pressure to be on Instagram daily, posting “authentic” content that somehow still looks like it came out of a magazine? (Spoiler: that’s not authenticity, that’s Canva on steroids.)
If you’re a neurodivergent woman in private practice, you’ve probably had these moments. And if you’re like me, you’ve wondered: Why does it feel like everyone else is running their business with ease, while I’m constantly two steps behind?
Here’s the thing: it’s not you. It’s the system.
What the System Doesn’t See
That “quick” progress note can take us 45 minutes because our brains get stuck on the details.
Marketing advice that says “just be consistent” ignores the ADHD rollercoaster of energy.
We weren’t wired for 8 hours of back-to-back sessions followed by bookkeeping marathons.
When we try to fit into the neurotypical mold, we don’t just get tired—we hit burnout, fast.
The Shame Spiral We Don’t Talk About
Here’s what I see over and over:
The to-do list grows.
Our brains freeze.
We avoid.
Cue guilt and shame.
Rinse and repeat.
And of course, the world tells us the answer is “discipline” or “time blocking harder.” 🙄
What Actually Works
The truth? ND brains thrive with:
Body-doubling: someone else present (even virtually) while you do the thing.
Flexible systems: tools that bend with your energy, not against it.
Community: other women who get it, so you’re not silently drowning.
Why I’m Building a Different Kind of Space
I’m done pretending. I’m done with the “shoulds.” And I don’t want any of us to feel like we have to go it alone.
That’s why I created the NeuroNurture Therapist Network — a community just for neurodivergent women who own private practices. A place where you can show up exactly as you are, share what’s really going on, and find strategies that actually work for your brain.
Final Thought (a little humor):
Because let’s be real… if another guru tells me to “just color-code my calendar,” I might throw a pastel marker across the room. 😅
